Rothrock, Winter, Taylor, and Subia represent at Nashville Criterium Series

Nashville Criterium 7/20/13 by Alan Rothrock

The day before the State Criterium Championship, some TBRA points were on the line and LP Field parking lot was swept of glass and coned off for some cycling action.  I was planning on doing the Cat3/4 event as well as the Pro123 race, but it being the day before the State Criterium and my training being questionable, I decided to take it easy.

The temperature was hot, the pack was big, and the competition strong.  Chris winter, Tim Taylor, Myself, and Octavio Subia geared up began trading punches with the usual suspects.  I usually enjoy going for primes, but there was a crowd of people around the start finish and about a half dozen of them had cow bells, so I never really knew what was going on!  Chris and I attacked several times, but never seemed to be able to get a successful break going, at one point we were even off together, but triggered a pretty good field response. At 5 to go, Tim Taylor put in a big dig and strung the field out making us all hurt.

With a couple laps to go, I moved up front with Chris and Octavio on my wheel, and the last lap some Treehouse riders strung it out and I played off their move.  Into the last half lap, I jumped and got a gap, and accelerated through the last corner took a look and realized I was going to pull off the win.  I sat down and in my final look realized that a rider was coming hard behind me, I tried to jump again, but it was too late!  David Howe came up on with some serious momentum and earned the W!  Rule # 8 of the season, Don’t ever let up in the sprint or you will end up being “that guy” that got nipped cause he was lazy.    This is right behind Rule #7 of the season, which is when 5 carbohydrate loaded cyclists are sharing a single hotel bathroom, and it’s time to “unload” use the LOBBY BATHROOM.

This is a great race series put on by NashvilleCyclist, and I was happy to represent the team, and it is always fun to get to race with some new faces!

Bryant Funston has some nice photography on his website, including pics from this race. Check it out.
